TROUBLESHOOTING PROBLEMS

  1. Windows cannot open this file appears in a Windows dialog when you double click the InstallJavaTools.jar file in the My Computer window.

    1. The Java SE Runtime Environent isn't installed on your computer. Download and install the latest version of the Java SE Runtime Environment (see Edit Download and Install Java Runtime Environment).
    2. The Java archive file type isn't registered on your computer. Register the Java archive file type (see Edit Troubleshooting Problems).
  2. Unknown command wscript appears in an Error dialog when you click Uninstall or Install in the Install Java Tools window.
    Windows Script Host isn't installed on your computer. Download and install Windows Script Host Version 5.6 (see Download Windows Script Host).
  3. A Norton AntiVirus Alert dialog appears when you click Uninstall or Install in the Install Java Tools window.
    The Delete and Create Shortcut scripts aren't authorized to run on your computer. Authorize the Delete and Create Shortcut scripts:

    1. Click the Action box in the Alert dialog then click Authorize this script in the popup list.
    2. Click OK.
  4. The Java Tools windows doesn't appear when you double click the Java Tools shortcut on the Windows desktop.
    Java Tools isn't installed properly on your computer. Redownload and install Java Tools (see Download and Install Java Tools).
  5. The mouse isn't working properly in any Java Tools window.
    J2SE Version 1.4.0 or later is installed on your computer and you're using the mouse scroll wheel. To recover, simply press down on the mouse scroll wheel and release it. Note that when this happens, the control keys still work even though the mouse doesn't.
  6. The command exclude is not valid until the VM is started error appears in the Debug window when you click Debug in the Java Tools window.
    J2SE Version 1.4.0 or later isn't installed on your computer. Execute the exclude command after executing the run command, or download and install the latest version of the Java Software Development Kit (see Download and Install Java Software Development Kit).
  7. The mouse scroll wheel doesn't work in any Java Tools window.
    J2SE Version 1.4.0 or later isn't installed on your computer. Download and install the latest version of the Java Software Development Kit (see Download and Install Java Software Development Kit).
  8. The line number doesn't appear on the blank line at the end of a Manifest File when editing the Manifest File.
    This is a bug in J2SE Version 1.3.1 that's fixed in Version 1.4.0. Download and install the latest version of the Java Software Development Kit (see Download and Install Java Software Development Kit).
  9. The tool tip doesn't appear when you hold the mouse over the Sound File box or when you click Help and hold the mouse over Java Tutorial in the Java Tools window.
    This is a bug in J2SE Version 1.3.1 that's fixed in Version 1.4.0. Download and install the latest version of the Java Software Development Kit (see Download and Install Java Software Development Kit).
  10. The unchecked or unsafe operations note appears in the Compile window when you click Compile in the Java Tools window.
    You probably created the Java source file using J2SE Version 1.3 or J2SE Version 1.4 and you compiled the source file using J2SE Version 1.5.0. To see the unchecked operations, click Options | Compile with Unchecked Conversion Warnings in the Java Tools window and recompile the source file using J2SE Version 1.5.0. To prevent the unchecked operations, click Options | Compile Class Files for Java Version 1.3 and Later and recompile the source file using J2SE Version 1.5.0.
  11. The unsupported class version error appears in the Execute window when you click Execute in the Java Tools window.
    You probably executed the Java class file using J2SE Version 1.3 or J2SE Version 1.4 and you compiled the source file using J2SE Version 1.5.0. To prevent the version error, click Options | Compile Class Files for Java Version 1.3 and Later in the Java Tools window and recompile the source file using J2SE Version 1.5.0.
  12. Directory isn't writable appears in an Error dialog when you click Install in the Java Tools window.
    If you're using Windows Vista, user access control (UAC) may prevent you from installing files in the Java home directory even though you're the administrator. To turn user access control off:

    1. Click Start in the taskbar.
    2. Click Control Panel in the start menu.
    3. Click User Accounts and Family Safety in the Control Panel window.
    4. Click User Accounts.
    5. Click Turn User Account Control on or off.
    6. Click Continue in the User Access Control dialog.
    7. Click Use User Account Control to help protect your computer.
    8. Click OK.
    9. Click Restart Now in the Windows dialog.

    After you've finished the install, be sure to turn user access control on again.
  13. You don't know what the editor window navigation keys are.
