INSTALLATION

Download and Install Java Software Development Kit

Note: This procedure describes how to download and install the latest version of the Java SE Software Development Kit that was available at the time this procedure was updated. For earlier versions, see Java Download Archive.
  1. Create the download directory if you haven't already:

    1. Click Start | My Computer on the Windows taskbar.
    2. Double click the Local Disk (C:) drive in the My Computer window.
    3. Click File | New | Folder.
    4. Change New Folder in the box to Downloads then press the Enter key.
    5. Click X in the top right corner of the My Computer window.

  2. Download the Java SE Version 1.6.0 Software Development Kit executable file:

    2. Scroll to JDK 6 Update 17.
    3. Click Download to thr right of JDK 6 Update 17.
    4. Click the Platform box then click Windows in the popup list.
    5. Click the License Agreement box then click Continue.
    6. Click jdk-6u17-windows-i586-p.exe under Windows Offline Installation.
    7. Click Save in the File Download dialog then click OK.
    8. Verify that jdk-6u17-windows-i586-p.exe appears in the File Name field in the Save As dialog.
    9. Click Up One Level until the Local Disk (C:) drive appears in the Save In field.
    10. Double click the Downloads directory.
    11. Click Save.
    12. Wait until the download completes (this may take several hours depending on the speed of your internet connection).
    13. Click Close in the Download Complete dialog.
    14. Click X in the top right corner of the browser window.

  3. Verify that the Java SE Version 1.6.0 Software Development Kit executable file was downloaded correctly:

    1. Click Start | My Computer on the Windows taskbar.
    2. Double click the Local Disk (C:) drive in the My Computer window.
    3. Double click the Downloads directory.
    4. Right click the jdk-6u17-windows-i586-p.exe executable file then click Properties in the popup menu.
    5. Verify that 77,125,400 bytes appears in the Size field in the Properties dialog.
    6. Click X in the top right corner of the Properties dialog.
    7. Click X in the top right corner of the My Computer window.

  4. Uninstall the current Java SE Version 1.6.0 Software Development Kit and Runtime Environment:

    1. Click Start | Control Panel on the Windows taskbar.
    2. Double click Add or Remove Programs in the Control Panel window.
    3. Click Java SE Development Kit in the Add or Remove Programs window then click Remove.
    4. Click Yes in the Add or Remove Programs dialog.
    5. Wait until the Java SE Development Kit uninstall completes (this may take several minutes).
    6. Click Java DB in the Add or Remove Programs window then click Remove.
    7. Click Yes in the Add or Remove Programs dialog.
    8. Wait until the Java DB uninstall completes (this may take several minutes).
    9. Click Java in the Add or Remove Programs window then click Remove.
    10. Click Yes in the Add or Remove Programs dialog.
    11. Wait until the Java SE Runtime Environment uninstall completes (this may take several minutes).
    12. Click X in the top right corner of the Add or Remove Programs window.
    13. Click X in the top right corner of the Control Panel window.

  5. Install the Java SE Version 1.6.0 Software Development Kit executable file:

    1. Click Start | My Computer on the Windows taskbar.
    2. Double click the Local Disk (C:) drive in the My Computer window.
    3. Double click the Downloads directory.
    4. Double click the jdk-6u17-windows-i586-p.exe executable file.
    5. Click Accept in the License Agreement dialog.
    6. Verify that C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.6.0_17\ appears in the Install to field in the Custom Setup dialog for the Java SE Development Kit.
    7. Click Change in the Custom Setup dialog.
    8. Click the Folder name field in the Change Current Destination Folder dialog and delete _17 then click OK.
    9. Verify that C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.6.0\ appears in the Custom Setup dialog then click Next.
    10. Wait until the Java SE Development Kit install completes (this may take several minutes).
    11. Verify that C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\ appears in the Install to field in the Custom Setup dialog for the Java SE Runtime Environment.
    12. Click Change in the Custom Setup dialog.
    13. Click the Folder name field in the Change Current Destination Folder dialog and change 6 to 1.6.0 then click OK.
    14. Verify that C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0\ appears in the Custom Setup dialog then click Next.
    15. Wait until the Java SE Runtime Environment install completes (this may take several minutes).
    16. Click Finish in the Wizard Completed dialog.
    17. Wait until Register appears in the browser window.
    18. When done browsing, click X in the top right corner of the browser window.
    19. Click X in the top right corner of the My Computer window.
