GETTING STARTED

Create, Build, Install and Test Hello Android Application

Note: In the steps below, you select the Basic tab in the Android Tools window then left and right click the boxes. If you so desire, you could also select the Advanced tab then left and right click the boxes and nodes there.
  1. Start Android Device Emulator:
    1. Click the Basic tab (default) in the Android Tools window.
    2. Click the Android Virtual Device box in the Basic tab then click MyAVD1 (default) in the popup list.
    3. Right click the Android Virtual Device box then click Emulator in the popup menu.
    4. Wait until Android appears in the top right corner of the Android phone in the MyAVD1 window (this takes several minutes).
    5. Drag the Unlock icon in the Android phone to the right to unlock the Android phone in the MyAVD1 window.
    6. Wait until the Launcher icon appears at the bottom of the Android phone.
    7. Click the Launcher icon.
    8. Wait until the application icons appear.
    9. Scroll to and click the Settings icon.
    10. Scroll to and click Languange & keyboard.
    11. Click the checked Japanese settings to deselect them.
    12. Click the Back key above the keyboard two times.
    13. Wait until the application icons appear in the Android phone.
    14. Right click the Android Device box in the Android Tools window then click List in the popup menu.
    15. Wait until emulator-5554 appears in the List Android Devices window.
    16. Click X in the top right corner of List Android Devices window.
    17. Click the Android Device box in the Android Tools window then click emulator-5554 in the popup list.

  2. Create Hello Android Application:
    1. Click the Project Directory box in the Android Tools window then click blank in the popup list.
    2. Right click the Project Directory box then click Create in the popup menu.
    3. Type HelloAndroid (default) in the Input dialog then click OK.
    4. Type com.android.helloandroid (default) in the Input dialog then click OK.
    5. Click Yes in the Confirm dialog.
    6. Wait until the create completes in the Create Android Project window.
    7. Click X in top right corner of the Create Android Project window.
    8. Verify that HelloAndroid appears in the Project Directory box in the Android Tools window.

  3. Build Hello Android Application:
    1. Right click the Project Directory box in the Android Tools window then click Build | debug in the popup list.
    2. Wait until Build Successful appears in the Build Ant Target window.
    3. Click X in the top right corner of the Build Ant Target window.

  4. Install Hello Android Application in Android Device Emulator:
    1. Right click the Project Directory box then click Install | debug in the popup menu.
    2. Wait until Success appears in the Install Android Application window.
    3. Click X in the top right corner of the Install Android Application window.
    4. Verify that the HelloAndroid icon appears in the Android phone in the MyAVD1 window.

  5. Test Hello Android Application in Android Device Emulator:
    1. Click the HelloAndroid icon in the Android phone in the MyAVD1 window.
    2. Wait until Hello World, HelloAndroid appears in the Android phone.
    3. Click the Back key above the keyboard.
    4. Wait until the application icons appear in the Android phone.

  6. Uninstall Hello Android Application in Android Device Emulator:
    1. Right click the Project Directory box in the Android Tools window then click Uninstall in the popup menu.
    2. Wait until Success appears in the Uninstall Android Application window.
    3. Click X in the top right corner of the Uninstall Android Application window.
    4. Verify that the HelloAndroid icon no longer appears in the application icons in the Android phone.

  7. Stop Android Device Emulator:
    1. Click X in the top right corner of the MyAVD1 window.

  8. Connect Android Phone to Computer:
    1. Connect the Android phone to a USB connector on the computer using a USB cable.
    2. Wait until Android appears in the top right corner of the Android phone (this takes several minutes).
    3. Drag the Unlock icon in the Android phone to the right to unlock the Android phone.
    4. Wait until the Launcher icon appears at the bottom of the Android phone.
    5. Press the Launcher icon.
    6. Wait until the application icons appear.
    7. Right click the Android Device box in the Android Tools window then click List in the popup menu.
    8. Wait until the number for the Android phone appears the List Android Devices window.
    9. Click X in the top right corner of List Android Devices window.
    10. Click the Android Device box in the Android Tools window then click the number for the Android phone in the popup list.

  9. Update Hello Android Application Android Manifest File:
    1. Click the Manifest File box in the Android Tools window then click AndroidManifest.xml (default) in the popup list.
    2. Right click the Manifest File box then click Edit in the popup menu.
    3. Find the starting application XML tag in the AndroidManifest.xml file in the Edit window.
    4. Copy and paste android:debuggable="true" at the end of the starting application XML tag.
    5. Click the Save button on the toolbar in the Edit window.
    6. Click X in the top right corner of the Edit window.

  10. Build Hello Android Application:
    1. Right click the Project Directory box in the Android Tools window then click Build | debug in the popup list.
    2. Wait until Build Successful appears in the Build Ant Target window.
    3. Click X in the top right corner of the Build Ant Target window.

  11. Install Hello Android Application in Android Phone:
    1. Right click the Project Directory box then click Install | debug in the popup menu.
    2. Wait until Success appears in the Install Android Application window.
    3. Click X in the top right corner of the Install Android Application window.
    4. Verify that the HelloAndroid icon appears in the Android phone.

  12. Test Hello Android Application in Android Phone:
    1. Press the HelloAndroid icon in the Android phone.
    2. Wait until Hello World, HelloAndroid appears in the Android phone.
    3. Press the Back key.
    4. Wait until the application icons appear in the Android phone.

  13. Uninstall Hello Android Application in Android Phone:
    1. Right click the Project Directory box in the Android Tools window then click Uninstall in the popup menu.
    2. Wait until Success appears in the Uninstall Android Application window.
    3. Click X in the top right corner of the Uninstall Android Application window.
    4. Verify that the HelloAndroid icon no longer appears in the application icons in the Android phone.

  14. Create Android Keystore File:
    1. Click the Ant Target box in the Android Tools window then click release in the popup list.
    2. Click the Android Keystore File box then click blank in the popup list.
    3. Right click the Android Keystore File box then click Create in the popup menu.
    4. Type androidreleasekey (default) in the Input dialog then click OK.
    5. Type release.keystore (default) in the next Input dialog then click OK.
    6. Click Yes in the Confirm dialog.
    7. Wait until Enter keystore password appears in the Create Android Keystore File window.
    8. Click the Enter field at the bottom of the Create Android Keystore File window then type the password and press the Enter key.
    9. Wait until Re-enter new password appears then type the password again and press the Enter key.
    10. Wait until What is your first and last name? appears then type your first and last name and press the Enter key.
    11. Wait until What is the name of your organizational unit? appears then type your unit name and press the Enter key.
    12. Wait until What is the name of your organization? appears then type your company name and press the Enter key.
    13. Wait until What is the name of your City or Locality? appears then type your city and press the Enter key.
    14. Wait until What is the name of your State or Province? appears then type your state and press the Enter key.
    15. Wait until What is the two-letter country code for this unit? appears then type US and press the Enter key.
    16. Wait until Is CN=..., OU=..., O=..., L=..., ST=..., C=... correct? appears then type y and press the Enter key.
    17. Wait until Enter key password for androidreleasekey appears then type the password and press the Enter key.
    18. Press the Enter key again.
    19. Click X in the top right corner of the Create Android Keystore File window.
    20. Verify that release.keystore appears in the Android Keystore File box.

  15. Update Hello Android Application Build Properties File:
    1. Click the Properties File box in the Android Tools window then click ant.properties (default) in the popup list.
    2. Right click the Properties File box then click Edit in the popup menu.
    3. Copy and paste the following lines at the end of the Properties file in the Edit window:
      key.store=${user.home}/.android/release.keystore
      key.alias=androidreleasekey
    4. Click the Save button on the toolbar in the Edit window.
    5. Click X in the top right corner of the Edit window.

  16. Build Hello Android Application:
    1. Right click the Project Directory box in the Android Tools window then click Build | release in the popup list.
    2. Wait until Please enter keystore password appears in the Build Ant Target window then click the Enter field, type the password and press the Enter key.
    3. Wait until Please enter password for alias appears then type the password and press the Enter key.
    4. Wait until Build Successful appears.
    5. Click X in the top right corner of the Build Ant Target window.

  17. Install Hello Android Application in Android Phone:
    1. Right click the Project Directory box then click Install | release in the popup menu.
    2. Wait until Success appears in the Install Android Application window.
    3. Click X in the top right corner of the Install Android Application window.
    4. Verify that the HelloAndroid icon appears in the Android phone.

  18. Test Hello Android Application in Android Phone:
    1. Click the HelloAndroid icon in the Android phone.
    2. Wait until Hello World, HelloAndroid appears in the Android phone.
    3. Click the Back key.
    4. Wait until the application icons appear in the Android phone.

  19. Uninstall Hello Android Application in Android Phone:
    1. Right click the Project Directory box in the Android Tools window then click Uninstall in the popup menu.
    2. Wait until Success appears in the Uninstall Android Application window.
    3. Click X in the top right corner of the Uninstall Android Application window.
    4. Verify that the HelloAndroid icon no longer appears in the application icons in the Android phone.
